Project Background
If a model rocket flies off course or if the recovery system failed it can be hard to locate the rocket after landing. Common systems use buzzers for acoustic localization. If the rocket landed far away the sound might not be hearable. A GPS tracker system would enhance the chance to recover the model and electronics. In order to transmit the coordinates LoRa seems well suited because of its low energy consumption and long range.
Project Goal
Develop, build and test a GPS tracker that fits into a model rocket and a handheld base unit to find the tracker.
Requirements
Tracker
- Fit into 35mm standard rockets
- Send out GPS coordinates (LoRa)
- Log GPS path after launch
- Provide WLAN hotspot
- Download of GPS path in .gpx format (WLAN)
Base Unit
- Display GPS coordinates
- Display direction and distance to tracker
